Building Number Sense K–6 will be exploring efficient instructional practices that build connections around number for students.

We will look at the ‘Why’ behind the mathematics needed to help students build connections with conceptual understandings in number.

Participants will explore programming and planning options to support classroom teachers organise number sense activities around ‘big ideas.’ The focus on problem solving, communication and reasoning will provide cohesive learning opportunities for students to explore concepts in depth.

Using ‘big ideas’ enables students to make links and connections to different concepts to overcome misconceptions and misunderstandings.

Taking time to look at useful research-based strategies and resources, participants will take home classroom ready ideas to add to their teaching ‘toolbox’ that build number sense to support struggling students in the K-6 classroom. A practical hands-on session!
