‘The best school money can’t buy’: How a Sydney principal has transformed a once‑rough school

The Professional Teachers’ Council NSW congratulates Lucy Carroll, the recipient of the Professional Teachers’ Council NSW 2024 Media Award for her award-winning article, ‘The best school money can’t buy’: How a Sydney principal has transformed a once-rough school Published: 24 November 2023 – Sydney Morning Herald.

PTC NSW 2024 Media Award is presented to individuals working in the media industry for their positive portrayal of the work of teachers and schools in NSW during the period 13th October 2023 to 6th October 2024. This year’s award-winning article focuses on the value of challenging gender stereotypes and promoting emotional literacy as part of boys’ learning experiences at Granville Boys High School.

The PTC NSW Selection Panel was impressed by how the story highlighted the work of school leadership in building a strong sense of community with students and parents. This uplifting article featured engagement programs including the school’s barbershop, two robotics labs, a chess club, a bagpipe band and free Saturday morning group tutoring sessions. These success stories are complimented by the schools improving NAPLAN results as explained by school Principal, Noel Dixon: “Turning around an underperforming school is like turning around a semi-trailer in a one-way street. It’s a tough gig, but it is possible.”

Strong leadership from a Principal who has a long-standing engagement with the school community, a committed and strong leadership team and staff are all working together to make a real difference in the lives of the young boys and men at Granville Boys High School.
