Award: Media Award

Year: 2023

The Professional Teachers Council NSW congratulates Conor Duffy, the recipient of the Professional Teachers’ Council NSW 2023 Media Award for his award winning article, ‘Rory’s using music to take on a ‘toxic mindset’, and 100 boys’ voices have joined in’, posted on ABC News, Friday 2 June 2023.

PTC NSW 2023 Media Award is presented to individuals working in the media industry for their positive portrayal of the work of teachers and schools in NSW during the period 14 October 2022 to 12 October 2023. This year’s award-winning article focuses on the value of challenging gender stereotypes and promoting emotional literacy as part of boys’ learning experiences.
The PTC NSW Selection Panel was impressed by the sensitive sharing of a story about programs which enhance wellbeing, particularly for boys, in exploring ways of communicating and dealing with emotions and life challenges in the context of musical expression. The article also provides links to a range of support services available for young people dealing with crisis situations.

The selection panel commented:

This article offers a positive perspective on education strategies for boys and draws on meaningful and successful programs working to make a difference in their lives.

Rory Phillips’s song, ‘Because Boys’, is an inspiring challenge to bring about change with the purpose of promoting boys’ expression of their feelings. The song’s vision is to transform traditional gender roles and open doors of expression that were previously taboo.
