Securing Our Online Rehearsals, Hidden Features, and What Can We Expect From Our Students

Presented by Lachlan Hamilton

Lachlan Hamilton graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2009 with a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance). He has over a decade of experience conducting school bands from beginners through to graduating Year 12 students. His ensembles consistently perform to high praise at festivals including the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival, Hornsby North Band Festival and Wahroonga Music Festival. He has taken the Killarney Heights High School wind and jazz bands to Japan on tour, where many musical exchanges were made with local school bands.

Through the Australian Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (ABODA), Lachlan has undergone professional development workshops with Larry Curtis, Steve Williams, and Mary Schneider, and regularly attends local and international band director conferences, including the Australian National Band and Orchestra Clinic (ANBOC) and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. This year, Lachlan was elected to the committee of the NSW branch of ABODA .

When the coronavirus pandemic forced many school bands to look to alternative ways of rehearsing, a decision had to be made as to which platform was best suited to meet the needs of band directors worldwide, with many choosing Zoom to fill this role. Zoom has been in the spotlight recently with concerns over its security and privacy. There are a number of ways that we can, and should, be securing our Zoom sessions to prevent “zoom-bombings”, and protect our students’ privacy.

There are also some hidden features of Zoom that can help us make our rehearsals more productive and efficient. What are they, and what can we realistically do in these sessions to get the most out of our students?
