This workshop will explore the links between music and literacy in prior-to-school and the early years of school. Participants examine the relationship between musicking with young children and the process of becoming literate. Particular attention is paid to rhythm, rhyme, phonemic awareness, prosody and melodic contour, and how songs and musical games can help lay the foundation for future reading and writing success.

Practical examples of materials for use with young children is offered. The importance of home-based musicking will also be considered, looking at current practices in the Australian context.

The workshop is presented by Dr Peter Whiteman, former Head of the Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University.
