Dr Sue Lane

19/05/2025 by

Award: James Sturgiss Exceptional Service Award

Year: 2024

Dr Sue Lane has dedicated her career to advancing music education in Australia. With many years of experience as a music specialist and classroom teacher on the Central Coast of NSW, she later transitioned into lecturing roles in Music and Dance Education at the University of Newcastle and the University of Technology, Sydney. After completing her PhD in 2019, Sue has continued her research, focusing on arts education provision in Australian primary schools.

Sue has made a profound impact on music teachers and the broader music education community through her involvement with the Orff Schulwerk Association of NSW (OSANSW). As an active committee member, she has played a key role in planning and delivering state and national conferences and workshops, frequently contributing as a presenter. As a vital member of the Orff Levels subcommittee, she has supported the training of teachers in music and movement, helping to shape professional development opportunities for educators.

More recently, Sue has been instrumental in securing NESA endorsement for OSANSW events,
dedicating countless hours to preparing and refining applications, responding to feedback, and ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements. In addition to this work, she has contributed to the Professional Teachers Council (PTC) Professional Learning Committee, where she was trained in assessing and approving NESA endorsement applications for other associations.

Beyond her association involvement, Sue continues to mentor and support teachers through the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Music in Me program, helping both specialist and generalist educators bring engaging and accessible music experiences into their classrooms. She also works as a music educator and presenter with Musica Viva Australia In Schools and Sydney Symphony Education, furthering her impact on the next generation of music learners.

Sue Lane’s unwavering dedication, leadership, and advocacy in music education make her a truly deserving recipient of the PTC NSW Exceptional Service Award for 2024.
