In this 2 hours Zoom workshop, we will develop a deep understanding of additive thinking in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division activities and then explore a wide variety of research-based strategies to develop multiplicative thinking.

Multiplicative thinking by students can be demonstrated by a capacity to work flexibly with the concepts, strategies, and representations of multiplication (and division) as they occur in a wide range of contexts.

Empowering your students to use effective multiplication strategies, which focus on distributive and associative properties, will enable students to think fluently and flexibly.

This workshop focuses on reviewing counting and additive strategies, how they fit into concepts that lead to multiplicative strategies in the K-8 classroom and supports students as they move towards proportional reasoning.

Feedback from this course:

“The time flew by, great pace, lots of ideas to move pedagogical practice and shift student reliance on additive strategies”.

“Meshed brilliantly with the current needs of our school. Fabulous guidance for exec staff to take back to the classrooms and teachers. Challenged me and improved my understanding of the progression from additive and multiplicative thinking.”
