This is a full-day conference that explores how texts can be used by teachers and teacher librarians to engage students’ imaginations, and immerse and inspire them to read and write. Specific attention will be given to the operation of the conference theme in both the primary and secondary stages, with reference made to the National Literacy Progressions.

The Literacy Continuum (ACARA, 2018) incorporates two overarching processes: “Comprehending texts through listening, reading and viewing” and “Composing texts through speaking, writing and creating.” These processes are the focus of this conference. Delegates will hear about the latest developments in textual forms, including Dr Khyiah Angel’s use of augmented reality in her latest YA novel; Dr Cathy Sly addresses the development of critical thinking skills in secondary students through the close analysis of graphic novels; Kylie Lawrence shares her collaborative work with teachers of STEAM in Year 4; Paula Madigan explores the key role of teacher librarians in supporting the new Stage 6 English Syllabus; Megan Perry presents ways the State Library’s physical and digital collections can be used to immerse and inspire students to read and write creatively; Elizabeth Martin shares strategies with primary teachers to inspire reading in students; a panel of TLs discuss genrefying the school library’s collections; and Dr Erica Southgate offers insight into her exploration of enhancing literacy through technology.
