‘Lost opportunity’ as NSW students give up language study in Year 6

….. a leading educational researcher says that despite high-levels of enrolment in optional language courses in students’ early years, the proportion of HSC students taking one or more languages has continued to plummet.

“Parents want their kids to learn their community or heritage language in a structured way … [but] their language skills may fossilise at the Year 6 level,” senior lecturer in Macquarie University’s Department of Educational Studies Robyn Moloney said.
