The NSW Institute of Teachers oversees a system of accreditation and recognition of a teacher's professional capacity against professional standards. It also provides a process for the profession to influence the quality of teacher training and continuing professional development.

Teaching in NSW
All people wishing to start teaching in a primary school or a secondary school in New South Wales are required to be accredited.

The Institute is responsible for recognition of teachers’ professional capacity against Professional Teaching Standards.

All Undergraduates and Graduates seeking to be employed as a teacher in a New South Wales school are required to be accredited.

The NSW Institute of Teachers provides information for NSW Graduate Teachers, Interstate Teachers and Overseas-trained Teachers

It provides information on:
• undergraduate and graduate qualifications required to become a teacher in a New South Wales school; and
• requirements to be eligible for accreditation to teach in NSW schools and
• links to approved initial teacher education programs.
