Society and Culture Personal Interest Project – PIP me with your wisdom stick!
Friday 2 March, 8.30am to 3.30pm
Venue: State Library, Macquarie Street Sydney

The day will provide teachers with advice and practical tips to assist them in the teaching and learning process for the Society and Culture Personal Interest Project (PIP).

Sessions:
Where the PIP has taken me - life as an academic: Presented by Dr Christina Ho, an ex NSGHS student who completed her PhD in Sociology presents insights into the value for students and teachers of the PIP for later academic study.

Board of Studies PIP requirements: Presented by David Hanslow, S&C committee member and practicing teacher; dealing with the specific requirements of the PIP and ways teachers can assist students meet the requirements.

The PIP - challenges and solutions: Presented by Emma Davidge, S&C committee member and practicing teacher; about ways teachers can approach teaching and learning for the PIP and ways they can assist students address the challenges of the PIP.

Research methodologies and ethical research: Presented by Maxine Johnson and David Hanslow, S&C committee members and practicing teachers; dealing with four specific research methodologies from the Society and Culture syllabus and ways to effectively teach the methodologies to students and assist them apply them effectively and ethically.

PIP topic selection advice: Presented by Nicole Martirena, S&C committee member and practicing teacher; dealing with teaching techniques and strategies to assist students work through and choose appropriate research topics for their PIP.

Workshops – simulated marking of the PIP. Presented by a range of practicing teachers and current HSC markers of S&C; presenting sample PIP sections and operating a simulated marking process.

Audience: Secondary teachers
Target: 11-12

The course is being presented by experts in the field including academics, Society and Culture Association officers and practicing teachers of Society and Culture.
Cost: $80 members, $100 non-members.
