Media Award

About the Awards

The Professional Teachers’ Council Media Awards are presented to a person or persons working in the media industry for their positive portrayal of the work of teachers and schools and their recognition of the value to the community of teaching as a profession.

These awards are presented annually and consist of:

	The Professional Teachers’ Council NSW Media Award
	The Professional Teachers’ Council NSW Regional Media Award

The focus of the Media Awards is on the value of teaching and learning. The nomination should have contributed positively to changing the public’s perception of the significance of teaching as a profession. It could be for one or a series of news stories, presentations, interviews or articles.


2006 Media Award Winners

The Professional Teachers’ Council Media Awards are presented to a person or persons working in the media industry for their positive portrayal of the work of teachers and schools and their recognition of the value to the community of teaching as a profession.

The 2006 Awards were presented at the PTC Annual Presentation Evening on December 5. Awards were presented by Ms Linda Burney MP, Parliamentary Secretary assisting the Minister for Education and Training.

PTC would like to congratulate the following winners:

PTC Major Media Award 2006
Dr Gordon Tait, Sydney's Child

Mr Sean Mooney, Copeland Publishing, nominated Gordon for the PTC Media Award.
Sean wrote the following to support his nomination of Gordon:

Dr Gordon Tait is Senior Lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, School of Cultural and Language Studies. In his article ‘Too Great Expectations’ Dr Tait argues that teachers are now expected to shoulder the burdens that others will not. He writes that teaching is a responsible job, and teachers have always been charged with the task of turning out the next generation of citizens – educated, healthy in mind and healthy in body. But he asks; “how far should this responsibility extend? How much can we reasonably expect teachers to be responsible for?” He investigates this issue and concludes that there is a strong argument to be made for our teachers needing greater support and commitment from the community in order to do their job well.
His article formed a central part of the August 2006 “Education” issue of the free parenting magazine, Sydney’s Child

PTC Regional Media Award 2006

Jane Gerhardy, Daily Advertiser
Mr Bill Rogers, Principal Wagga Wagga High School, nominated Jane for the PTC Regional Media Award.

To support Jane’s nomination, Bill wrote:
Jane Gerhardy has demonstrated an outstanding ability to display teaching as a valuable resource in our community. In her work as a journalist with The Daily Advertiser, Jane has put forward concepts and examples that display how schools and the work of teachers can make a difference to young people today. The two feature articles she has written ‘World Her Classroom’ and ‘Walking Our World’, highlight the quality teaching practices established at Wagga Wagga High School. Not only have these stories captured the imagination of the local community, but they have helped students to understand and appreciate the value of their education. Teachers play a critical role in the education of children and Jane has called attention to this. She has clearly portrayed the ways in which the school enhances the quality of learning for students and she has promoted the importance of good health, which is of particular importance in today’s society. Jane has promoted awareness of the significance of teachers and the imperative role they play in the lives of young people.
